The final chapter of the book sums up most of what we’ve been trying to understand: how we use our houses to increase our sense of psychological and social well-being. Spend some time with the illustration at the beginning of this chapter. We’ll spend some time discussing it in some detail.  Note:  This is a dormitory room.   If you happen to live on campus,  does this room look more comfy or less comfy than yours?
For Monday, November 18

Read, in Rybczynski,
Chapter 10, "Comfort and Well-Being" pp. 217 - 232
I want to thank those of you who showed up for one or more sessions of the conference on the Equal Rights Amendment. Friday or Saturday.  Roger Williams University doesn't host national/iternational conferences very often, and I was glad to offer you the chance to attend.  As you see above, we're going to do Friday's work today, and we'll be spending a lot of time with this illustration and the question asked above.
For Wednesday, November  20

No new Readings--but make sure you've gotten as far as possible in Tracy Kidder's  "House"  We'll start discussing in on Friday.

In the meantime, we'll watch a film which summarizes the development of the American House, called, oddly enough "The House" from the series, America by Design.
For Friday, November  22

We will hold our first general discussion of the BOOK, House.  by Tracy Kidder.  I will be looking for your general impressions of the book, and what your impresssions of the various characters in the book are.  This structure means something different to each of the persons represented in the book.   We'll be looking at a lot of issues, gender differences, class differences, and more.  You will probably be a bit surprised by the career paths of the members of the Apple Corps company.  You may already be surprised, if you've read that far in the book.
The House involved.  How many very similar houses have you seen in Bristol or Warren?  You might try taking some pictures of some of them.  We'd enjoy making the comparisons.  (The Bristol houses are well over 100 years older).
